There’s a pretty short list of professional baseball players that have come out of Juneau, and the list just grew by one.

Kellen Moen, 23, is the most recent MLB draftee from Alaska’s capital city after going to the Kansas City Royals in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft on June 7.

Moen joins Toby Staveland, Chad Bentz, Joe Ayers and Zack Kohan as players from Juneau to be drafted.

It wasn’t meant to be.

Juneau-Douglas’ bids for back-to-back softball and baseball state championships came up short over the weekend, with the both teams dropping their two games in their respective state tournaments.

The ASAA/First National Bank 2011 State Softball Championships is a double-elimination tourney, but the Bears dropped both of their games Friday, 6-3 to West Anchorage and 3-2 to East Anchorage.

Manager Dave Massey said the softball team, which generally has no trouble putting up runs, couldn’t its offense going.

Juneau-Douglas opens the first round of the state baseball tournament at Palmer’s Hermon Brothers Field today against South Anchorage, and manager Sheldon Winters isn’t taking any chances.

Senior ace Miles Bedford, a hard-throwing left-hander, will take the hill as the Crimson Bears, the No. 1 seed from the Southeast Conference, face the only in-state team to beat them during the regular season, the Cook Inlet’s second-seeded Wolverines.

The first pitch is at 4 p.m.

Juneau-Douglas capped off the softball regular season Friday with a series split with the Wolves in Sitka.

The Crimson Bears lost their second game of the season Thursday, 13-4, before rebounding for a 6-1 win on Friday.

The large schools defending state champion Crimson Bears finished the year 17-2-1, and will begin defense of their title Friday, but the opponent and time has yet to be announced.

Manager Dave Massey said the team did not play well Thursday and might have been a bit distracted.
