Waiting… and waiting… and waiting for October 17th to come around. It seems like we haven’t played in forever and still have a little less than a week before we head to Gorzow to finally play again. While this break has been nice and allowed some time for relaxing, recovering, and excessive episodes of TV shows online, I think we are all ready to play again.

Also, due to this break, we had the opportunity to travel about 45 minutes to a city called Puck and visit one of the elementary schools there. We spent close to 5 hours at the school interacting with the children, teachers and multiple executives from our club and the professional leagues in Poland. We started off by demonstrating our typical warm-up drills to the teachers while a few of our players presented speeches and answered questions from the kids. Then we broke the children up into groups and had a mini-clinic. We finished off the day by playing two games; one against the executives, and the other with a few of children from each group.

The trip was very rewarding and a lot of fun to be a part of. The only real downside was the language barrier. Because the children were so young, they haven’t started to learn English yet. Most students here begin to study English around the time they reach high school. This made it very hard to interact fully with the children but we tried to use the few Polish words we know combined with some high fives to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. In my group I had two boys who kept talking to me at the beginning and I had no idea what they were saying. So I tried to just laugh and smile along. When they continued to talk, I finally had to ask one of my teammates to tell them that I speak English and can’t understand them. After she told them, they appeared a little confused and nearly looked at me sideways, but then they smiled, waved, and went back to dribbling their basketballs.

Today was an exciting day at practice because we were given our third practice jersey of the season. Before you jump out of your chair to celebrate for me, let me just explain a little about the truth behind the jerseys. The material is nice, similar to a dri-fit like fabric. However, the fit is another story. It may be a little hard to fully explain but imagine a short and slim fitting tank top with holes just large enough for my arm to fit through and a neck-line that is so high that it nearly restricts my breathing. Lastly, the color choices aren’t very logical. Our team’s colors are the three primary colors; mainly blue and yellow but with a little red as well. Until today we have had one baby pink and one baby yellow practice jersey. Makes sense right?  I know, I’m still a little puzzled myself. Today our addition completed the Easter collection with a baby blue practice jersey. Now, we look like we are either attending an Easter celebration or awaiting the arrival of a newborn that we are unsure of the gender. Either way, the conclusion to all of this is simple; I miss Nike!

In other news, I have been trying to expand and improved my chef skills as the weeks have gone by. This week I attempted to make some chili and to my surprise it actually turned out fairly well. I was a little worried because I guessed on about half of the ingredients I used and would not consider myself a master chef by any means but it actually was pretty good. This is simply another example of how the little things continue to keep me going and feel accomplished!
