Poland may be behind America in many ways, however not when it comes to daylight savings time. Last night we “fell back” an hour- a whole week before it happens in the U.S. This is just further proof that Fall is officially here. The weather has most definitely been an indication of that as well. Temperatures are dropping and we even had a short period of a little snow. This week is expected to be in the low 40s, which doesn’t seem too bad but for some reason it feels a lot cooler than that. Luckily, I’m playing an indoor sport so I don’t have to be like one of the countless soccer and rugby players we pass daily as they’re bundled up running around in the rain and cold weather.
We had two games this past week. We earned one win and lost another close one. On Wednesday we hosted PTK Pabianice and won 72-59. This was a good game for us and nice to get a win. It was also good because it offered a few firsts for me. It was the first time I have played against a team that wore basketball jerseys with tennis-like skirts instead of basketball shorts. I know I have expressed slight disapproval with our team’s jerseys, however after playing this team I will not complain anymore. This team also had the oldest player I have ever played against- their post player was 38 years old. Hard to imagine playing at the professional level until 28, let alone 38!
On Saturday we played at home against the 4th place team in our league, Energa Torun. We lost 84-74 and this game will definitely join the list of games we should’ve won. We led by as much as 15 or 20 points in the first half, yet lost the lead and were tied at halftime. The second half was pretty much even. We were tied with about 3 minutes remaining but after Torun made a run we found ourselves down by about 10 with a minute to go and unable to recover.
Aside from the games, our organization made a change this week and gained a new sponsorship. Up until this week our team has been Basketball Investments Gdynia, however after welcoming a new sponsor our name is now Centrum Wzgórze Gdynia. Not completely sure what this means for our team besides having a new name and a new logo on our jerseys and shooting shirts, nor what type of company Centrum Wzgórze is but everyone was excited about it and it is a positive change for our team.
This coming week has a couple highlights to look forward to. First Halloween, which unfortunately isn’t celebrated quite like it is back home, but I will celebrate vicariously through all of my friends posting pictures of their costumes online. I did try to find a pumpkin at the store to at least have some sort of holiday celebration. That was a bit of a failure though. Apparently they sell their pumpkins in quarters; which makes it pretty hard to carve into.
We have a full week of practice before leaving Friday to drive to Polkowice to play CCC Polkowice on Saturday.
Happy Halloween and Go Gdynia!
