3 in a row!

We are in the midst of ending the first part of season with a strong run. Last Friday’s victory marked the third in a row, adding to a much needed win streak. On Friday we traveled 5 hours on the bus before arriving and playing against PTK Pabianice, also known as the “team in the skirts.” The game was very slow with not much scoring in the first half, maybe the long bus ride beforehand contributed, however the fourth quarter was very strong for us and we come away with a 68-47 win.

It is now Monday and our last week before break is underway. In exactly one week from today we will be heading home for the holidays but first we have a couple of games to take care of. On Wednesday we will play our first Polish Cup game. The Polish Cup is separate from the PLKK league we normally play in and is kind of like a big on-going tournament. If you win, you continue playing and if you lose you are done. I’m not sure exactly how many teams there are or how many games you have to win to reach the finals but I guess we will find out if we keep winning.

In addition to the Polish Cup game, we will end the 2012 portion of this season with a home game on Saturday against AZS OPTeam Rzeszów, the same team we played a couple of weeks ago and won by 2 points. After that game we will have Sunday off before heading home on Monday!

In non-basketball news, we are finally experiencing a bit of the freezing winter temperatures we heard so much about. Up until the past couple of weeks the temperature was still in the 40s and unlike most of Poland, we didn’t have any snow. Last week it started to get much colder and this week is supposed to be in the 20s with snow almost every day. The winter weather wouldn’t be as bad if we had a key to our garage to keep our car in, or if the heaters in our apartment worked. The heaters in our apartment didn’t work at all until a specific date when some magical authority decided it was OK to finally turn them on. The heater in my room works sometimes, however the ones in the living room, bathroom, and kitchen aren’t on and don’t have a knob to turn them on so someone with a special tool has to come. This hasn’t happened yet but hopefully will at sometime soon because as of now the only real way to warm up is to take a hot shower.

Last week there was another Polish holiday celebrated. December 6th is known as Santa Day. I’m still a little confused on the actual meaning of the day but my teammates were explaining that it’s a day you get small gifts from your friends. It’s not as big of a holiday as Christmas, but it was fun to celebrate as we got a cupcake after practice that day.

The city here is full of Christmas decorations. There are lights everywhere, trees decorated, and Christmas music playing. On Saturday we walked around the area by the Pier in Sopot and they had a huge tree lit up, a small tea-cup ride, and about 10 booths set up with crafts, wine, food, and other gifts. Also, yesterday they had a big motorcycle brigade with people dressed in Santa costumes riding down the main street from Gdansk to Gdynia, which we unexpectedly caught part of. As the song goes, “it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas,” and I can’t wait to be home for the holidays!
