Greetings from our snowy neighborhood in Sopot! I guess they were just waiting until the New Year to give us some snow, as we are now in the midst of our third consecutive day with snow and the forecast is predicting this to continue for another three days. Also, since I have been back from break, I’ve noticed the amount of darkness during the day. I’m sure it was like this before I left but maybe I just wasn’t aware until I went home and got to experience a more normal amount of sunlight during the day. Since I have been back it has been pretty obvious that there is not much daylight and it has really been reminding me of the dark days during winters in Alaska. I began wondering about the comparison of latitudes between here and Juneau because it does seem so similar. I decided to put some of my spare time to good use and do a little research. Sure enough, Gdynia and Juneau are only separated by 4 degrees with Juneau being at 58 degrees North and Gdynia at 54 degrees North. Pretty cool comparison I thought!
Anyways, enough about the weather, we finally got to play some basketball last night! We had our second game of the Polish Cup and won 72-49. The game was actually played against the team here in Gdynia that plays in the division lower than us. It would be comparable to a high school varsity team playing their junior varsity team. This was a game we expected to win but hopefully it will be enough of a warm-up as we prepare to start up league play again on Saturday. We play Gorzów who we are currently nearly tied for 6th place in the league. The winner will be in 6th and the loser in 7th as we move forward down the home stretch of games.
While Jamie was here we tried to visit as much of the Tri-Cities area as possible. One of the highlights was making a trip to Old Town in Gdansk. It was a cold a slightly rainy day however that didn’t erase the beautiful and unique architecture and history of the area. After walking around for a bit we stopped at a coffee shop to warm up with a cup-o-joe and were surprised to witness Little Bo Peep meet her friends doing the same. Okay, it wasn’t really Little Bo Peep, however this lady was dressed just like her! People watching here is pretty entertaining at times but I still don’t think it beats downtown Seattle during the Anime conventions!
Another exciting event has been my recent driving accomplishment; I have learned to drive a manual car. (I think driving to practice and back without staling or having any problems gives me the right to say I’ve learned.) I’ve never driven one before this past week but we have been using an additional car, which happens to be a stick shift so I decided to take a crack at it and see if I could figure it out. I have actually been doing surprising well and kind of have been enjoying it. Maybe the racecar driving arcade games have paid off. I doubt it, but I am enjoying it as long as I stay on flat ground!
Hopefully next time I check in we will be sitting in 6th place. Go Gdynia!
