Around the bases

Little League Baseball

Our hope in the Juneau Empire Sports is to bring out more community sports news. This requires a lot of input from the community. I would love to hear from locals about little league tid-bits from their past, present and future to include. Such as:

This sports editor actually played for the Petersburg Little League Majors Divison All-Stars (it was year 19-something-something B.C.) and we got trounced 12-2 by Sitka at the district tournament in Haines. JDHS baseball state champion head coach Sheldon Winters was on that Sitka team. It was on that trip that my host family had recently waxed their kitchen floor and I, in baseball cleats, found out that my feet could actually go over my head without warning if moving too fast through a kitchen.

Did you know???

An “action pitch” is the pitch thrown when the count is full (three balls and two strikes) with two outs and men on base. The situation calls for the base runners to start running just before the ball is delivered (MLB, rules vary in various leagues/levels). The catcher and infielders must be ready for quick defensive actions and error-free play.

“Right down Broadway” is a pitch that is delivered in the middle of the strike zone.

“Fence buster” is a heavy or power hitter.

“Texas Leaguer” is a bloop hit that drops between an infielder and outfielder.

“Tater” is a home run. Also known as a homer, blast, dinger, dong, four-bagger, four-base knock, moon shot, and tape-measure blast.

“Leather” refers to how good a player playes defensively or handles the glove, “He flashed some leather on that play.”

A GCLL sanctioned coach, score keeper or parent who can provide a very brief accounting of games for print (no glory here, this is non-byline stuff). An example would be, oh, such as:

Ruth Electronics 47, Abe’s Car Rental 9

Herman Ruth III and Babe Ruth JR each drove in a pair of runs and Ruth Electronics scored at least five times in every inning as the Mariners won a Major League Friday at Cope Park, 47-9, against Abe’s Car Rental Cardinals.

Jay Ruth and Bobby Ruth each had an RBI. Martha Ruth pitched for the Mariners and struck out one. James Ruth made a nifty catch in centerfield to stop a come back in the ninth.

Abraham Lincoln hit for the cycle for the Abe’s Car Rental and had four RBI. George Washington started on the mound for the Cards, striking out one and walking eight.

GCLL will host the minor division (age 9-10) Southeast all-star tournament July 6-9.The minors do not advance to a state tournament. The Major and Juniors District Softball Tournaments will also be hosted in Juneau in mid to late July. The 2012 Major, Junior and Senior League Baseball All-Star Tournaments are away (Major district Haines, Junior district Petersburg, Senior district Sitka. State tourneys are in Anchorage).
