Last Thursday, the 6th of September, I got on the jet to Anchorage early in the morning, transferred to PennAir in Anchorage after lunch, and arrived in Unalaska that afternoon. I went north, then southwest, but if I had flown straight from Juneau to Unalaska, I would have gone in a southwesterly direction.
This month, I’ve been out at the University registering voters once or twice a week for the Juneau League of Women Voters Registration Drive. We do this in pairs, and we’re there for two hours over lunch time. There’s lots of time to talk.
Anne Fuller was my registration partner on September 25th. Anne is a Storyteller and Gatherer of Stories. I told her I was doing this blog and felt a responsibility to do it in a community building, yet interesting, way. At one point, Anne said, “The question is why do we tell the stories we tell?”
I published a blog about Canada's relationship to the United States based on a poem that was written about the presidential debates. I thought the author lived in Canada, but she doesn't. Rather than try to unravel the blog, I have taken it down. Lesson learned: double and triple check the facts!
Here are the comments that have shown up under the November 12, 2012 My Turn I wrote about paycheck fairness. They post under the cloak of anonymity, but I think it's important to share what they think of the issue of equal pay. I wish I could bring Lilly Ledbetter to town to talk about The Lily Ledbetter Act and her book "Grace and Grit: My Fight for Equal Pay and Fairness at Goodyear and Beyond". "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, and a stranger into a friend." Melody Beattie
I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. Holidays, particularly Christmas and Thanksgiving, bring back memories of family gathered around the table. We've sat at tables where two or three tables were placed end to end, and covered with different tablecloths and different sets of dishes.
On August 23, 2012, carolyn V. Brown of the League of Women Voters wrote an editorial to honor Women’s Equality Day titled “Equality – There is work to be done.” The op-ed talked about the issues still facing women, including the paycheck gap. In the comments section below, “noroadfugtive” disputed the idea of a wage gap between the genders, quoting Steve Tobak in a CBS News piece.
Just as most Juneau folks worry about "Capitol Creep", (that is not a person, it's the gradual moving of state government offices to Anchorage), I worry about the gradual progression of international jewelry stores on South Franklin Street edging their way into our core downtown and snuffing it out.
Today’s (November 4, 2012) Juneau Empire has a helpful straightforward comparison of where President Obama and Mitt Romney stand on sixteen of the pressing issues of our time. I hope every undecided voter reads it and makes up their mind based on these two men’s positions. This election is not the time (if there ever is one) for making a decision based on one single issue. Voters need to look at the totality of the candidates’ governing philosophy and character.
Well, it's been three days since the election and President Obama won. Some Republicans are doing some soul-searching. Others are saying the political equivalent of "The dog ate my homework." But the election was too close for either side to be smug.
The November 11th issue of the Empire had an article on page A9 with the headline:"Vatican digs in after gay marriage advances". A shorter article next to it declared, "Pope resurrects Latin with academy to boost study." I tore the page off, folded it, and set it on my desk, where it has languished for almost three weeks.
