Melissa and the mystery of the misplaced signs

I had a Nancy Drew adventure today. Sort of.

I have neighbors on one side of my house who are not good neighbors. I constantly find trash discarded from these neighbors into my yard and there is space between my house and the building that is rarely, if ever, trod upon. I wanted to check that my dog was in the back yard — maybe my directional hearing is not so great — so I stuck my head out the window that overlooks that eyesore area that I've basically given up on and discovered not just discarded trash from those pesky neighbors, but two signs that belong to local businesses.

There are no reasons for those signs to be there, except that they were... stolen!

The sleuthing wasn't too difficult, as returning stolen signs is generally as easy as reading the name of the business on the sign and taking the sign there, but one of the signs was a little more vague. It read, "Lobbyist," and had a hand pointing. I knew I had seen it before, but I wasn't sure exactly where downtown it was from.

I called the Juneau Police Department to ask if any signs had been reported stolen. Apparently not. I was ready to investigate!

So I took my faithful hound (miniature pinscher, easily bought with treats) to the general area where I thought the Lobbyist sign once hung and ran into Alaska General Store owner Sarah Stucky, a fond acquaintance and purveyor of fine clothing, out walking her actual hound, Dottie. When I told Sarah about the sign, she told me it was from right there on that street and closed up her shop to help me return both signs.

Maybe my little adventure in being an upstanding citizen isn't fodder for a full youth novel, and maybe I didn't have to work as hard as Nancy Drew to solve this mystery, but it was probably the most exciting thing that would happen all day and I'm happy to have something more in common with Nancy Drew than a vaguely similar hair color and style.
