The literal fruits of my labor

Late this spring, when we were first having that summery weather, I decided to weed out and garden a patch in my back yard. I had helped my mom garden in the past and I've written an article or two (three, actually) about other people gardening, so I figured it was something I could handle.

After one day of grueling weeding and turning over of soil with a shovel, I had cleared about a quarter of the yard. Let's call it good.

A day or so later, I took a few stores by storm, buying some flowers, some starter vegetables and strawberry plants, and some seeds to sow. I planted them in the plot and in some planters and then waited.

Most took, some did not. The lavender was not happy. A couple lettuce starts didn't make it. And as little green shoots began emerging, I realized that I had no idea which were weeds and which were good plants.

Now, several weeks later, I did some weeding again, mostly sure which were the bad plants and which were the good plants, and I got to taste the first fruit of my labor. A very tiny, but ripe, strawberry. It tasted great. 

I'm excited for more berries, for beets, green beans, carrots, onions and lettuce, all grown and tended by me. 

I definitely will still be heading to the grocery store for many, even most, of my food needs, but it is definitely kind of neat to eat something right out of your own yard (after washing it). Maybe someday I can be a crazy chicken lady like our Outdoors editor Abby.
