A lot happens in 10 years

For better or for worse, I don't imagine many people can go to a reunion without comparing it to Romy and Michele's — or is that just me?

My reunion probably wasn't as fancy as in the movie, the lighting wasn't as dramatic and I'll admit that music from the late '90s and early '00s was mostly worse than Cindy Lauper's Time After Time.

Highlights included seeing at least a couple good friends, interacting with some acquaintances and discovering we had more in common than before, and having one person who had been kind of mean to me, starting in seventh grade, be really friendly now. There was also a photo booth, which lends itself to a lot of silly fun that provides some tangible memories.

We followed the official event with a visit to a bar shadier than any I have encountered in Juneau. I mean that. And after that, those of us still interested in socializing with our former classmates headed to one's house — his parents were out of town.

I don't think any new romances were kindled — unlike in the movie, though it was interesting to see what had blossomed over the years, with many married, many with kids and at least a handful expecting children in the near future. One memorable scene from the movie was when the popular guy Romy had been into tried to make a pass on her and she turned him down as she had been turned down in high school. In not so dramatic a way, a guy I had had a little crush on my freshman year did get drunk and try flirting with me — and every other female within arm's length. It was good for a little laugh, I think.

There was a questionairre that everyone was asked to fill out, featuring questions about marriage and children, travels and changes; I took the honor of having visited the most countries — 16, while I lost the distinction of farthest from home because, though Alaska feels like the end of the earth to many people, even Dallas, Texas is technically farther.

I'm thankful I wasn't voted least changed, because though 10 years feels a bit like a blip from this perspective, a lot has happened and I think I'm a better person with a lot to show for the last decade's efforts.

Now I have another decade to be even cooler at the 20-year. Maybe then someone will show up in a helicopter.
