I had a Nancy Drew adventure today. Sort of.

Something strange has happened — the real deadline for having a Wearable Art project done is 5 minutes before show time, yet I am already done. I even left the article in the possession of the model so she could practice in it — and so I couldn't change my mind or add to it.

I think my mom is always waiting for me to develop the nurturing and maternal qualities and skills she possesses. Nobody knew I could cook until I lived on my own, even then, my parents may have been disappointed in how these traits manifest. Once, I came home for a visit and offered to make dinner for the family, cooking the meat separately in case of vegetarians — there are no vegetarians in my family.

When I read the list of pre-filed bills for the 28th legislature, I was pretty disgusted to see Rep. Bob Lynn was at it again with a voter ID law. For one thing, Alaska already has rules about voter identification. It requires one piece of ID, or a poll worker to know with certainty you are who you say you are, or you can vote a questioned ballot. Voter Fraud isn't an issue around here, or in the U.S. as a whole. So why is there a bill on the table to fix this non-existent problem?

You know those movies in which the whole premise is an underdog sports team overcoming the odds and the challenges to take home a win and everything is so heartfelt and you are supposed to feel inspired and motivated and overjoyed? Least. Favorite. Genre. Inspirational sports films? No thank you.

But it goes further than that. Inspirational dance movies? Nope. Inspirational films about teachers reaching inner-city students? Cringe. There is something about the saccharine and cliches that makes me want to barf.

Today we printed a Ketchikan Daily News editorial suggesting Sen. Pete Kelly's SB74, which would establish a University Building fund, like the Alaska Public Building fund, would be a great way to reduce expenses and debt for the State of Alaska.

"Collecting rent from the departments is an important feature of the fund because the university will encourage better use of space..." Kelly is reported to have said in this editorial.

I wrote this before, but lost it. Here we go again.

This was my second year of participating in the Wearable Art Extravaganza and it was wonderful. I convinced my friend Jess to be my model again because we make a great team.

In August of 2012 I spent hours listening to Bill Overstreet tell his life story, from birth in a small Oklahoma town to current projects — the man was 86 and still had current projects! Tonight I answered the phone after hours to the news that he had died this afternoon.

There are locals who won't step foot downtown during the summer months because of the locust-like swarms of tourists — living downtown, sometimes I wish I could practice avoidance — but the tourists, when they find their way out of the diamond stores, are on to something. We live in a super great place. That's why we live here, after all.

Almost every week I have the pleasure of handling engagement, wedding and anniversary announcements. The photos are often of two people looking lovingly at one another, almost with giant sparkles in their eyes, or a couple with arms wrapped around one another like they want to never let go, or sometimes it is of two people with laughing smiles and eyes squinting because, obviously, they find joy in each other's company.
