Happy Thanksgiving

I’d like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to everyone back home! I hope everyone is enjoying time with family and friends and of course their turkey feasts as well. I certainly wish I could be home with my family to celebrate, however I’m more than thankful to be where I am today. Athletes sacrifice a lot to meet the demands of their seasons and for basketball players, this includes missing time with family and friends during winter holidays. I am definitely accustomed to being gone for Thanksgiving. Over the past 6 years, I have been home for one Thanksgiving and that was the past year when I made the trip from Seattle and Portland and back just for the day. Poland joins the Bahamas, Las Vegas, Hawaii, and Seattle in the places I have spent Thanksgiving since going to college and have all been hosts to a basketball tournament. I am very thankful for those opportunities I’ve had and playing professionally here in Poland is no exception.

Unfortunately, Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Poland so today didn’t feel much different than any other day. We had practice this afternoon and then I went with one of my American teammates to our favorite American restaurant for our Thanksgiving dinner. We figured this would be the closest thing to a turkey dinner we would be able to find. We also learned that turkey is pretty much non-existent here. Even if we were able to find one, we don’t have an oven in our apartment so cooking our own Thanksgiving feast was not really an option. For dinner, I topped off an All-American cheeseburger with some apple crisp to celebrate the special day. Then, I came home and browsed the abundance of pictures of Thanksgiving dinners on Instagram and Facebook and was brought right back to reality and reminded of what I was missing.

Aside from Thanksgiving, this week has been pretty mellow in my neck of the woods. We are about half way through our week and a half without a game and have been practicing frequently and intensely. We only have four games left before it is Christmas break and are hoping to leave for break on a positive note.

As Thanksgiving comes to an end here in Poland it is officially time to start thinking about Christmas. Let the Christmas music play and the countdown to home begin!
