Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! 2012 is officially in the books and it was yet another great year to look back on. One of the biggest highlights and most notable accomplishments was signing my first professional contract, leading me to where I am today- back in Poland!

I had a great time at home and the 10 days flew by. Maybe it was a good thing I didn’t have much longer, otherwise I might have started to suffer from a permanent food coma. I was definitely looking forward to some home cooked meals as I headed home and I don’t think there is a better time for that than the holidays. I even got to bring some treats back with me; thanks Mom!

When I got back to Poland from break they didn’t waste anytime getting us back in the gym. Just four hours after I landed, we had weights and the very next day we had a scrimmage against the Under 20 Polish National Team. The scrimmage went well especially considering we only had one short practice after being off for nearly two weeks. We practiced for a couple more days and then had a two-day break to celebrate New Years. We spent New Year’s Eve in Sopot at the Pier. Fireworks are legal to purchase here, and people have been shooting them off for the past three or four days at all times of the day. On New Year’s Eve there were a ton of fireworks. I am pretty sure there was an actual fireworks show going on but it was a little hard to tell because of the mass number of individual shows happening everywhere.

Now that New Year’s is over, we are back to work. Today we had our first of four days with two practices and then we will finally get a break this weekend. The good part about coming back when we did is we got to scrimmage the National Team, and experienced a major holiday in another country. However, the bad part is we don’t have a game scheduled until the 9th; which means A LOT of time to practice. On the 9th we will play our second game in the Polish Cup and then three days later we will have our first regular Polish league game of 2013.

Our team is currently in 7th place with only 1 or 2 games separating us from the 4th place team. We have 6 regular season games remaining and they are against each of the 6 teams placed higher than us. It’s going to be a tough 6 weeks, and every game will be very important but it will be an exciting push down the home stretch.

Aside from basketball, I have been lucky the past few days to have my friend Jamie visiting. We have been doing our best to play tourist and see all of the main attractions in Sopot, Gdynia, and Gdansk. So far we have been to the Pier in Sopot and in Gdynia, walked along the coast of the Baltic Sea, gone shopping, and enjoyed some good meals out. We have a little less than a week left to fit as much more in as we can before she heads back to the U.S.
