It seems like not too long ago that I was on an early morning flight from Portland to start a journey filled with high hopes as well as many unknowns. Today, I am on my way home, and while it doesn’t seem like it, it was nearly 7 months ago that my professional career began in Poland.
It is officially March and for basketball fans that means one thing- March Madness. College basketball has already had so many upsets and exciting games, it seems as though March Madness has been going on all season, however now it’s officially tournament time and for us here in Poland it is no different. We are in the middle of a five-game series in the first round of the playoffs for our league. Unfortunately, things aren’t off to a great start and we are down 0-2 in the series but we will be returning home to play game three in another week.
The past three games have been about as close as we can get to winning without actually earning a victory. An eight point loss to the top team in our league, followed by a two point loss on the road to the fourth place team, and then a five point overtime loss this past Saturday against the second place team in our league, Artego Bydgoszcz.
We are coming off a long but fun weekend that included a road trip to Kraków, where we faced one of the top teams in our league Wisla CP Kraków. The game could’ve gone better as we lost 83-59. However, keep in mind that this team is not only one of the best teams in Poland, they’re also a top team in the Euroleague and have the WNBA’s MVP Tina Charles on their team among other great players.
Greetings from our snowy neighborhood in Sopot! I guess they were just waiting until the New Year to give us some snow, as we are now in the midst of our third consecutive day with snow and the forecast is predicting this to continue for another three days. Also, since I have been back from break, I’ve noticed the amount of darkness during the day. I’m sure it was like this before I left but maybe I just wasn’t aware until I went home and got to experience a more normal amount of sunlight during the day.
Happy New Year! 2012 is officially in the books and it was yet another great year to look back on. One of the biggest highlights and most notable accomplishments was signing my first professional contract, leading me to where I am today- back in Poland!
Hello from America! I made it home last night and it feel so good! The travel was long, as expected, but was problem free thanks to my light cardio session through Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. This was my first time having to run to catch my flight but after my 2-hour layover was consumed by the slowest moving customs process ever, I was left with no choice but to fasten up my backpack and hit the terminal running. Nonetheless, I made my flight and after the 23 hours of travel, I was home sweet home.
We are in the midst of ending the first part of season with a strong run. Last Friday’s victory marked the third in a row, adding to a much needed win streak. On Friday we traveled 5 hours on the bus before arriving and playing against PTK Pabianice, also known as the “team in the skirts.” The game was very slow with not much scoring in the first half, maybe the long bus ride beforehand contributed, however the fourth quarter was very strong for us and we come away with a 68-47 win.
I’d like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to everyone back home! I hope everyone is enjoying time with family and friends and of course their turkey feasts as well. I certainly wish I could be home with my family to celebrate, however I’m more than thankful to be where I am today. Athletes sacrifice a lot to meet the demands of their seasons and for basketball players, this includes missing time with family and friends during winter holidays. I am definitely accustomed to being gone for Thanksgiving.
