It’s a beautiful clear and crisp fall day here in Poland and has been this way for about 4 or 5 days now. The leaves are turning colors and the days and especially the nights are starting to get a little chilly. We have today off and will be spending it by resting and recovering from a long week and going to watch a couple of basketball games including one of the professional men’s teams from Gdynia.
Poland may be behind America in many ways, however not when it comes to daylight savings time. Last night we “fell back” an hour- a whole week before it happens in the U.S. This is just further proof that Fall is officially here. The weather has most definitely been an indication of that as well. Temperatures are dropping and we even had a short period of a little snow. This week is expected to be in the low 40s, which doesn’t seem too bad but for some reason it feels a lot cooler than that.
November 11th is an important day and national holiday in America as well as Poland. While Americans are honoring Veterans and those who have served our country, Poland is celebrating its Independence Day; equivalent to our 4th of July without the fireworks and elaborate celebration.
I’d like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to everyone back home! I hope everyone is enjoying time with family and friends and of course their turkey feasts as well. I certainly wish I could be home with my family to celebrate, however I’m more than thankful to be where I am today. Athletes sacrifice a lot to meet the demands of their seasons and for basketball players, this includes missing time with family and friends during winter holidays. I am definitely accustomed to being gone for Thanksgiving.
We are in the midst of ending the first part of season with a strong run. Last Friday’s victory marked the third in a row, adding to a much needed win streak. On Friday we traveled 5 hours on the bus before arriving and playing against PTK Pabianice, also known as the “team in the skirts.” The game was very slow with not much scoring in the first half, maybe the long bus ride beforehand contributed, however the fourth quarter was very strong for us and we come away with a 68-47 win.
Hello from America! I made it home last night and it feel so good! The travel was long, as expected, but was problem free thanks to my light cardio session through Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. This was my first time having to run to catch my flight but after my 2-hour layover was consumed by the slowest moving customs process ever, I was left with no choice but to fasten up my backpack and hit the terminal running. Nonetheless, I made my flight and after the 23 hours of travel, I was home sweet home.
Happy New Year! 2012 is officially in the books and it was yet another great year to look back on. One of the biggest highlights and most notable accomplishments was signing my first professional contract, leading me to where I am today- back in Poland!
The past three games have been about as close as we can get to winning without actually earning a victory. An eight point loss to the top team in our league, followed by a two point loss on the road to the fourth place team, and then a five point overtime loss this past Saturday against the second place team in our league, Artego Bydgoszcz.
It is officially March and for basketball fans that means one thing- March Madness. College basketball has already had so many upsets and exciting games, it seems as though March Madness has been going on all season, however now it’s officially tournament time and for us here in Poland it is no different. We are in the middle of a five-game series in the first round of the playoffs for our league. Unfortunately, things aren’t off to a great start and we are down 0-2 in the series but we will be returning home to play game three in another week.
