Romer Derr

 

Romer Derr died Jan. 26, 2012. He was 75.

Derr graduated high school in Stockton, Calif. and moved to Fairbanks when he was 20. He moved to Juneau in 1957 to work on what is now Juneau-Douglas High School and called Juneau home until his death.

He worked as part of the effort to approve statehood in Alaska, and even rang a bell 49 times to celebrate statehood during Juneau’s official statehood celebration.

He served two terms as president of the Juneau Chamber of Commerce, was a founding member of the glacier Valley Fire Department and served on Juneau’s Docks & Harbors Board for two terms. Two governors also appointed him to the Alaska State Historical Commission.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carole Jean, and his son, Brian. His survivors include his wife, Laraine, daughters Chiska (Dean Heard) Derr and Gretchen (Bill) Pence, stepdaughter Evonne Dwyer, stepson Calvin Noonan and many other family members.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chapel By the Lake Presbyterian Church, 11024 Auke Lake Way. A reception will follow in the church’s Smith Hall.
