Death notice: Richard John Newton

Richard John Newton, 74, died in Sierra Vista, Ariz., on Oct 17, 2013.


He was born in Wrangell, Alaska, on March 6, 1939. His early years were spent in Kake where his parents, Richard and Henrietta Newton, served as officers in the Salvation Army.

Dick graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1957 and attended Oregon State University before serving in the military, retiring as a Major. During his military career he was recognized and honored for receiving many badges and medals.

He will be remembered in Juneau for his love of singing and being an undefeated ping pong champion at the Zach Gordon Youth Center Teen Age Club. In his lifetime he was a golfer, skier and bowler, and he won medals in Sierra Vista’s Senior Olympics.

Richard’s Tlingit name was “Eshgaaxk’”. He belonged to the Eagle moiety, the Tsaagweidi clan.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Patricia, and his son, Richard Jeffrey. He is survived by his sister, Myrna (Willie) Allen; daughters, Marie (Mike) Wurth, Tammy (Ray) Pritchett and Michelle (Alan) Dean; son, Richard Jeffrey (Debbie); and nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He will be placed with his son at the Old Cemetery at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., with military honors at his request.
