A graduate student visiting Southeast Alaska from the University of Kent will share his work studying names in the region that incorporate Native words for cedar. The lecture takes place at noon today in the Walter Soboleff Building.

The Coast Guard rescued three stranded boaters Friday morning from a small island in Favorite Channel. The three men called for help at about 7 a.m., saying the bad weather — two-foot seas amid wind and rain — left them stranded on Bird Island, near the Shrine of St. Therese, according to the agency.
