Yakutat ousts Metlakatla from Masters tourney 

Yakutat rolled to an 82-60 win in Wednesday’s afternoon Masters Bracket contest against Metlakatla, but it wasn’t as easy as the final score suggested.

It took a while to wake up, but Yakutat turned a 34-32 halftime lead into a blowout after outscoring Metlakatla 48-28 in the second half to send it home early in the 65th Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament.

C: Hoonah clocks Klukwan; Yakutat wins 64-59 slugfest 

So much for depth being overrated.

Hoonah took it to Klukwan in C Bracket action Wednesday during the 65th Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament, outplaying the Chilkats in nearly every aspect of the game in a 109-87 romp at Juneau-Douglas High School.

But Hoonah had a clear advantage from the tip.

With only one reserve available for the game, Klukwan’s bench was outnumbered six to one, and that discrepancy proved a big factor in the final score.

B: Hydaburg, Hoonah move on 

When the Hydaburg Haida start hitting shots from beyond the arc, watch out.

Hydaburg overcame yet another slow start to pull away from Yakutat, eventually holding on for an 82-72 win Wednesday afternoon at the 65th Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament at Juneau-Douglas High School.

The Haida fell behind 14-11 early to a physical Yakutat team which, as it did on Monday against Angoon, wanted to slow the pace against a team that prefers to run.

But it was only a matter of time before the Edenshaws got going.

Klukwan Masters edge Huna Masters 

The Klukwan Masters took it to a fill-in Metlakatla team on Monday afternoon, but it was a different story Tuesday against Huna in M Bracket action.

The Masters from Hoonah won a tight 73-65 battle against Klukwan, overcoming a three-point deficit at halftime to outscore Klukwan 42-31 in the second half and advance in the winner’s bracket of the M Division during the 65th Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament.

Angoon staves off elimination 

Angoon sprinted to a 12-3 lead Tuesday to open its C Bracket contest in a loser-out game before cruising to a 94-61 win to eliminate Hydaburg from the 65th Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament at Juneau-Douglas High School.

Angoon controlled the paint and gave up nothing easy under the basket, blocking and altering shots throughout the contest while owning the glass.

A 7-0 run early in the first minutes pushed Angoon ahead 12-3, punctuated by easy buckets after Hydaburg turnovers.

Klukwan completes comeback win 

Klukwan seemed to be in an up-hill battle all game against Shee Atika on Tuesday afternoon at Juneau-Douglas High School.

And while it might have taken overtime, Klukwan lasted the longest in a 85-78 C Bracket slugfest to advance to play Hoonah at 2 p.m. today.

Shee Atika controlled much of the first half Klukwan was unable to muster the type of offense it wanted early in the game. Atika was looking good heading into the break, even though a double-digit lead had been chiseled to five points, 38-33.

Klukwan rallies to oust Klawock 

Klukwan came out firing but Klawock didn’t fold.

The Totems closed the first half with a 17-4 run to rally from an early 11-point hole, ousting Klukwan from the 65th Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament, 76-65, on Tuesday at Juneau-Douglas High School.

Klukwan made a trio of 3-pointers, one by Kevin Thompson and two by Jacob Hotch, in building its early lead. Levi Hotch added two free throws and two more 3-pointers, and then two David Barry free throws pushed Klukwan ahead 23-12 with about 13 1/2 minutes left in the first half.

Hydaburg heats up 

It was a closer game than Hydaburg would have liked on Tuesday night in B Bracket play of the 65th Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament.

At least for a little while.

Hydaburg overcame an early deficit to blow out Kake 107-92 in a game that was over by halftime.

Gold Medal Roundup 

Klukwan and Metlakatla kicked off M Bracket action in the 65th Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament on Monday, and it was Klukwan that showed little rust with a 93-60 win at Juneau-Douglas High School.

This one was over by halftime as Klukwan had already run the score to 45-26 by the break, and the team from Metlakatla — a fill-in for the Anchorage team that didn’t make the tournament — never made it back into the game.

Chris Wassaman and Rob LaRose led the way for Klukwan with 29 and 25 points, respectively, and teammate Rick Ackerman pitched in 14 of his own.

Angoon outmuscles Yakutat 

Yakutat tested the physical limits of the defending B Bracket champion on Monday night, but Angoon’s scoring depth was too much in the end.

Angoon outran Yakutat in the second half as the champs showed once again why they’re the favorite to repeat in an 85-63 win in the second round of the 65th Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament at Juneau-Douglas High School.
