A play late in the first half proved a perfect illustration of Angoon’s speed and quickness, and Haines’ inability to stop it.

As Angoon’s Clayton Edwin streaked towards center court wit the ball, Ben Egolf reached for a steal. Edwin deftly moved out of the way, Egolf stumbled and fell into his teammate Kevin Thompson, and both fell on the floor in a heap.

It is hard to imagine there is a gymnasium where Hydaburg’s Vinnie Edenshaw has hit more long-range bombs than the Juneau-Douglas High School gymnasium he played in Wednesday night.

Edenshaw dumped in 33 points, including eight triples from four feet past the arch, as Hydaburg clashed and battled to a 93-80 win over powerhouse Metlakatla during a Gold Medal B bracket elimination game.

“I have been hotter,” Edenshaw said. “I just had to take my time, square my body up more and find my rhythm.”

Thanks to his teammates Edenshaw had plenty of time.

Angoon continued to make a run for another title dream a reality with a 92-82 win over Kake on Tuesday night at the Gold Medal Tournament.

Kake, the surprise B bracket team of the tournament, trailed 44-30 at the half and battled back to within 10 points on back-to-back triples by Adam Dolan and Brandon Jackson.

Kake closed within six, 66-60 on a basket by Jackson but Curtis Lane and Jordan Jamestown keyed a 9-0 run to take command again.

Steve Fossman scored 14 of his game-high 21 points in the first half as Klukwan held a 37-26 lead at the break of their 65-61 win over Hoonah in Tuesday’s Gold Medal Masters play. The fast breaking Jilkats ran to a 51-31 advantage to open the second half and stretched that out to a 55-34 with 11:15 remaining.

“It was our hustle,” Klukwan’s Chris Wassman said. “We have size inside and we have a nice outside game, and our bench has been deeper than in past years.”

The game looked dismal for the Hoonah Masters.
