Remember

Today is Pearl Harbor Day, the day we commemorate the air strikes on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and the invasion by the Japanese. My mother's first cousin, Harold Arneberg, died on the U.S.S. Vestal. My mother's beloved and only brother, Bill Collins, was killed during the war. Forever young, his photo was always in a prominent place in our home.

Juneau, let's hug

Hi Juneau,

It's been a rough couple weeks for many of us. If the crowd at the Newman boys' memorial was any indicator, I might estimate there are thousands of us in pain right now. More now that we've heard news of Jimmy's passing as well. For some, it's the pain of seeing someone die before their time. For some of us, it's the pain of losing a friend. And it's a really bad kind of pain.

For the week after I found out about the boat accident, I wrote letters in my head to Casey, eventually writing some on paper.

The Pope is sitting on my desk

The November 11th issue of the Empire had an article on page A9 with the headline:"Vatican digs in after gay marriage advances". A shorter article next to it declared, "Pope resurrects Latin with academy to boost study." I tore the page off, folded it, and set it on my desk, where it has languished for almost three weeks.

Turning 60

“Yoga is 99% practice and 1% theory” - Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India

This week I will be 60 years old. I’ve been thinking about this birthday for a while, as is the trend with those big decade landmarks.

My blogs are often easy to write. I love to share my stories about my adventures outdoors and the words usually flow out on to the page. This one has been very difficult to write. I’ve started and stopped and started over again about half a dozen times over the past couple of weeks

Another terrific Juneau Public Market

by Barbara Belknap

We came home with a heavy bag of goodies from the 2012  Juneau Public Market. When we got there around 2:00, the line was moving quickly. Once we had our bright red tickets, Doug and I split up at the double doors so we could check out our favorite vendors and browse at our own speed. We agreed to meet back in the entry area at 4:00.

Happy Thanksgiving

I’d like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to everyone back home! I hope everyone is enjoying time with family and friends and of course their turkey feasts as well. I certainly wish I could be home with my family to celebrate, however I’m more than thankful to be where I am today. Athletes sacrifice a lot to meet the demands of their seasons and for basketball players, this includes missing time with family and friends during winter holidays. I am definitely accustomed to being gone for Thanksgiving.

I am thankful — and aware

A few years ago, I was celebrating not having to work on a Thursday, Thanksgiving, by going out to have some drinks with a friend of mine; when we entered the bar, a woman greeted us with something like, "Happy Native American Slaughter Day" and I had no immediate response.

Happy Thanksgiving!

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, and a stranger into a friend." Melody Beattie

I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. Holidays, particularly Christmas and Thanksgiving, bring back memories of family gathered around the table. We've sat at tables where two or three tables were placed end to end, and covered with different tablecloths and different sets of dishes.

News from "2012 Vision2020 Congress – Collaborating for Change"

I’m sifting through the business cards, notes, and notations from the 3rd Vision2020/Drexel University Congress in Portland, Oregon. I got home late yesterday after a long day of flying broken up by a wonderful lunch date with our daughter in Seattle.

Vision2020 is an ambitious program to achieve equality for women in five areas by the year 2020:

* Increase the number of women in senior leadership positions in American life to reflect the workforce talent pool and demographics;

Hiking buddy

"Mommy! I'm a good hiker, aren't I?"

His little Bogs boots crunched across the snow-covered, frozen boardwalk. Every few feet my son would pause to stomp an ice ball, peer into a dark hole or swipe his mitten through a tuft of downy snow before plopping it promptly on his tounge.

"Of course your are," I said. "You can be my hiking buddy any day."
