Miles And Mileage

It is a funny thing about miles. And mileage.
They sure can sneak up on you.
Yesterday I needed a fix.
I hadn't burned a quad or pumped up a calf muscle or froze a lung in a week.
So I called my "pusher" and he invited me, along with another "joneser," to run up Eaglecrest Road.
Those five miles turned into the Black Bear chair lift and a return along the Treadwell Ditch Trail, via one section of muskeg and one still demolished bridge crossing, to Douglas.
Five miles can become 22 in little time when you have mileage accompanying you.

The most wonderful time of the year: Halloween

"The most wonderful time of the year" refers to Christmas for most people, but I choose Halloween.

Choose Restraint

 “Choose Restraint”

On October 14, 2012, Governor Parnell had an opinion piece in the Juneau Empire titled, “From Rampant to Rare – Domestic Violence in Alaska”, to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month. He focused on his signature social issue of reducing violence against women.

Fall is Here

It’s a beautiful clear and crisp fall day here in Poland and has been this way for about 4 or 5 days now. The leaves are turning colors and the days and especially the nights are starting to get a little chilly. We have today off and will be spending it by resting and recovering from a long week and going to watch a couple of basketball games including one of the professional men’s teams from Gdynia.

An Elder's Pledge

The Fall/Winter 2012 Syracuse Cultural Workers catalog turned up in our mailbox with its L.L. Bean and Soft Surroundings brethren the other day. Of the three, it's the only one that proclaims itself "Earth & Union Friendly". The SCW catalog is an unapologetic treasure trove of lefty, feminist, and power to the people posters, calendars, cards, bookmarks, and books.

Great news — our calendar is getting better and better

We have some exciting news about an old feature of our website which will soon be brand new and expanded. We will soon bring you a community database, a one-stop shop for all things Juneau where you can search for a variety of activities, or just search what’s happening at a specific venue.
The best thing about it is community groups can enter their own event information. This isn’t just an arts, entertainment or sports calendar. It is Juneau’s directory of events, clubs and sports leagues.

Our Tribes

Imagine sitting down for a lovely dinner with friends and plunging right into the presidential elections. "No politics at the dinner table!" That's excellent advice unless everyone shares the same ideology, in which case it’s fun. Endorphins rise. Everyone is animated. They interrupt and talk over each other. They belong to the same tribe.

Community Engagement

Waiting… and waiting… and waiting for October 17th to come around. It seems like we haven’t played in forever and still have a little less than a week before we head to Gorzow to finally play again. While this break has been nice and allowed some time for relaxing, recovering, and excessive episodes of TV shows online, I think we are all ready to play again.

Is 25% (updated to 31.9%) the best we can do?

Juneau has its Super Voters who never miss an election. We have the “I’m too busy” voters, the “What election?” voters, the “My vote doesn’t matter” voters, and, I guess, as much as it pains me to say so, there are the “I don’t care” voters.

A peek inside local artists' spaces

For the second year in a row, the Franklin Street Gallery at the Baranof Hotel has organized a month-long series of artists’ studio visits – it's a great opportunity for locals to learn more about their favorite artists and to introduce themselves to those they may not know yet. The list of those participating is impressive, and includes some of Juneau’s most prominent local artists. A total of 15 artists in all responded to the open call.
