Juneau-Douglas improved to 3-0 on the year after laboring through a 3-1 win over visiting 3A Mt. Edgecumbe on Thursday in Juneau.

The Crimson Bears dropped the first game before coming on to win the match, 22-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-23.

JDHS actually led by as many as six points twice in the first set and held a four-point, 20-16 advantage after Carly Gunnerson and Gracie Meiners combined on a block, but faltered down the stretch.

Leading 22-19, the Braves scored the final six points, with three hitting errors against the Bears, to take an early 1-0 lead.

Juneau-Douglas cruised to big wins in the boys’ and girls’ 5K cross-country races for the second time in as many weeks Saturday in Wrangell, with David Francis and Sid Browning once again posting the fastest times.

The JDHS girls’ and boys’ teams ran away with the overall top spots, both winning handily.

The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears varsity volleyball team rolled over the Thunder Mountain Falcons on Saturday, sweeping all three games 3-0 (25-16, 25-16 and 25-12) at JDHS. The sweep came just one night after dropping their first game ever to the Falcons in the rivalry’s short history.

The win completed a two-match, two-day set, with the Bears topping the Falcons 3-1 (27-17, 23-25, 25-4 and 25-23) on Friday.

JDHS coach Sandi Wagner said the Bears played much better as a team on Saturday than the night before, but still have a lot of work to do.
