If there were any doubts after last year, there aren’t anymore. The Juneau-Douglas boys’ soccer team is a machine.

The Crimson Bears held a clean sheet once again and defeated rival South Anchorage 1-0 in the title game of the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska 2011 State Soccer Championships in Anchorage.

They are now the two-time defending state champions and have made it to the final game 10 of the last 12 years.

Twenty six Crimson Bears stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first inning as Juneau-Douglas scored 20 runs, rolling to 24-0 pasting of Petersburg in the final game of the opening day of the Region V Baseball Tournament at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park.

Top-seeded JDHS faces No. 3 Sitka at 6 p.m. today in the double-elimination tourney bracket. The Wolves defeated No. 2 Ketchikan 21-6 earlier in the day Thursday.

The No. 2-seeded Crimson Bears overcame a slow start against No. 7 Colony to take their opening round match 3-1 and advance to the semifinals against West Valley at the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska 2011 State Soccer Championships.

“I think we were a little nervous at the start,” Bears coach Gary Lehnhart said. “We missed on a lot of passes, but at least we kept it in their end.”

If the Juneau-Douglas girls’ soccer team had to pick a time to peak in 2011, it would be right now.

The No. 2-seeded Crimson Bears begin their run at the state championship today against No. 7 Colony, and it’s safe to say this group is playing its best soccer of the season. The second overall seed proves that, but it’s not everything, coach Matt Dusenberry said.
