South sweeps singles to edge JDHS tennis 5-4 

South 5, Juneau-Douglas 4

South battled past Juneau for a 5-4 nonconference tennis victory Saturday in the Alaska Invitational at the Delaney Park Strip.

All of the singles matches went South’s way, while Logan Allred teamed with Alex Elson to nab the Wolverines’ only doubles victory.

Tarver scores second goal for NAU 

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Northern Arizona soccer team outshot its opponent for the second straight game but still dropped its fourth consecutive match of the season, a 3-2 overtime decision to Northern Iowa Sunday afternoon at Lumberjack Stadium.

It also was the second straight game the Lumberjacks took a one-goal lead into the final 10 minutes of regulation, only to surrender the game-tying goal.

Bears keep Moose winless in Juneau 

The Moose are still 0-for-Juneau.

No. 3 Juneau-Douglas took a 20-0 lead and held off a gutsy Palmer rally, knocking off the Railbelt Conference rival Moose 29-13 Friday night at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park.

Palmer has never won in the Capital City, and a late 29-yard field goal by first-year kicker Adam Soto and a 10-yard Jerick Ibias touchdown run with 46 seconds to play kept it that way.

After scoring 125 points in their first two games, things were shaping up for another Crimson Bear blow out when Juneau-Douglas took a 20-0 lead into the half.

JDHS swim teams begin with a bang 

Juneau-Douglas began the 2011 swim and dive season on a high note, sweeping the opening Region V Craig Swim Meet over the weekend in Craig.

The girls’ team took first with 104 points, 32 points better than second-place Ketchikan. Thunder Mountain finished third with 33 points, followed by Sitka’s 17, Petersburg’s 13 and Craig’s 9.

New blood infuses JDHS girls; boys reloading 

The Juneau-Douglas boys’ swim team has been at or near the top of the state rankings for several years now.

The girls believe it’s their turn.

“Ahh, the girls,” co-coach Kathie Millhorn said, excited by possibilities of big things. “We’re going to be strong this year. The girls just have a certain intensity about them this year because they recognize they could be a strong group. They’re pulling together and trying to make that happen.

Juneau-Douglas' next gen 

The 2011 Juneau-Douglas cross-country season kicks off this Saturday in the Capital City Invitational Meet at Savikko Park, featuring teams from around Southeast.

And the Crimson Bears will have a new look.

This is the first season JDHS will be without the guidance of longtime cross-country coach Guy Thibodeau, who retired last season after 35 years.

Bears pound Patriots, 57-0 

NORTH POLE — North Pole didn’t see the end zone against Juneau-Douglas, but the Patriots hadn’t seen a defense like the one the Crimson Bears presented.

It was partly responsible for a 57-0 loss for the hosts in Saturday’s Railbelt Conference game at Patriot Pride Field.

Garrette Duncan led North Pole with three catches for 38 yards but for most of the cloudy afternoon, he and other Patriots wide receivers were covered tighter than a drum.
