Quid pro oil?

I think I should have gone to the Republican Governor’s Conference. There must have been some seminar where they all learned the latest in governing: extend corporate giveaways and then cry budget deficits that can be solved only by reducing government services and busting public employee unions. The governors of Wisconsin, Ohio, and Maine were especially good students.

Our own Gov. Sean Parnell realizes that some 27 percent of Alaskans are public employees of one sort or another and has declined union busting. But he did pick up on the part about corporate giveaways. He has been pushing for some time for a $2 billion reduction in oil company taxes with the vague stated hope that higher oil company profits will somehow result in more investment in Alaska. I guess that Republican governors’ seminar never got to the part about getting an iron-clad deal to get something in exchange for giving away public resources. Or maybe they did. Maybe the exchange is more money spent on Republican’s re-election campaigns.
