There is another redistricting plan

I read with considerable interest your article about the redistricting plan proposed by Republican Party Chair Randy Reudrich, on behalf of “Alaskans for Fair and Equitable Redistricting (AFFER).

Leaving aside the question of whether Reudrich is really being “respectful of the desires of Native people” when he doesn’t even know where they live (“Petersburg has a significant percentage of Natives”), readers may be interested to know that there are other choices.

Several Southeast residents, including myself, served on a committee that created another plan, which was also submitted to the Redistricting Board: The RIGHTS Plan. The RIGHTS Plan satisfies all state and federal constitutional requirements, meets the mandate of the Voting Rights Act, provides for Southeast regional proportional representation, and honors borough boundaries. To see a copy of the maps and narrative, interested readers can visit the RIGHTS website:

Thank you for offering the public a view of the work of citizens’ groups dedicated to good government and an apportionment plan that not only complies with legal requirements, but also truly respects the rights of all citizens, no matter when they live.
