No toxins in water near Mendenhall Campground

I would like to thank Juneau citizens for sharing their concerns regarding foul odors that are sometimes present near the Mendenhall Lake Campground entrance.

We share your concerns. We just met with the City manager, two representatives from the State’s Department of Environmental Conservation, a forest level hydrologist and engineer, and other interested partners to better understand the problem, and to find a solution.

Initial test results from DEC sampling showed water samples are within compliance standards and indicate the smell is not being generated by a toxic source, including sewage.

More testing is being planned, and possible solutions are being explored.

As more information is available, we will work with the other agencies to assure you will be kept informed.

We appreciate your patience.

Thanks for caring about our wonderful backyard, Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area. (And think snow!)
