Wants vs. needs

I would like to voice my concern over the number of projects (and price tags) that our Assembly will be trying to prioritize for the ballot in October 2012.

I have been told there is some $200 million in “wants” from various groups and entities that are all vying for our 1 percent sales tax revenues to fund their program or project.

I encourage our Assembly that whatever project(s) or program(s) that they ultimately choose to put on our ballot, that they please keep them as separate, standalone items.

We, the voters, are capable of choosing which items on the ballot we feel are most worthwhile and needed — without having all projects or programs lumped together.

In light of the recent Empire articles depicting budget shortfalls in the neighborhood of $7 million, I am hopeful voters will be prudent in realistically voting for “needs” rather than “wants” to keep Juneau’s budget in line for our future. I will personally vote for projects that promote jobs and infrastructure, like water and sewer expansions, and anything that will eventually lower the high cost of living and housing in Juneau.

We are in much better financial condition than many cities across the state and country, and we must strive to remain that way.
