I beg you not to set off your fireworks on New Years.
I live in the valley and have two big dogs, one is elderly but they both fall apart each year when you set off your fireworks on New Years and the 4th of July.
I do give both my dogs sedatives but they do not work 100 percent. Even though my dogs are sedated they still tremble, drool and stumble as they try to get up and find a place to hide from all the noise and this goes on as long as you are setting off your fireworks. It is just gut wrenching to see my pets like this.
This year I am very worried that my oldest dog Sadie will not survive the noise because she has a serious heart condition. I worry that the combination of sedatives and stress will kill her.
Please, if I could drive somewhere to take my pets away from all the noise I would, but there is no place for us to go to get away from the noise in Juneau.

The human condition won't change,,,, and as a dog kinda guy, I have had great dogs that were fine with fireworks, and a Beagle that would tremble and freak. Take your dogs to a quiet place out the road on these predictable nights, because man will not change, you make the difference. Dogs want to protect you, some develop anxiety because they have no way to fathom a protection for explosives.

My daughter also gets scared of the fireworks. Rather than sedate her, we drive to the ferry terminal when people begin to light them off. It's too bright for anyone to consider firing them off there and it is nice and quiet. I bet it would work for you too.
Take your dogs to a quiet
Take your dogs to a quiet place out the road? Drive and sit at the ferry terminal? Both of those are unreasonable given the amount of time people set off fireworks. The fireworks never stop after just a few hours. People set off fireworks beginning January 30 at midnight and pretty much don't stop until January 2. The 4th of July is even worse. We sedate our dog and place her in a kennel in a quiet area and she is still freaked. We cannot even put her in a fenced backyard because she can literally climb a six-foot wooden fence. Obviously, fireworks will never stop during these two times of the year. What would be nice is if people could contain themselves to a few hours. A populated neighborhood at 4am is just plain rude - not to mention illegal.
agreed with all
Our dog and my sisters all freak out and shake.. I like fireworks, but will draw a line for my fur-kids.. every year there is a bunch of people who go onto Glacier Valley Elem. ballfields and set off fireworks most of the night.. one year they almost set the 4th grade wing on fire when they landed on the roof. Checking into a hotel that takes pets is kind of spendy, but a good idea, you can keep warm and the one near GCI is away from the valley echo noises.. maybe they can give deals to pet owners and people with children.. I know the one by the airport is a pet friendly and has a pool.. make a mini vacation from it.. worth the sanity of your family during this time..

I have fixed a number of cracked ceilings caused by Fireworks in several homes in the Valley.
Really, today's Fireworks are just too loud and explosive to be setting off in our dense neighborhoods.
wow
wow
As far as I'm concerned,
As far as I'm concerned, fireworks are still explosives and should not, even during the holidays, be allowed on school grounds OR at the ferry terminal due to national security. Are they allowed in the airport for New Years? Probably not, so why are they at the terminal? I hope your dogs are safe this season.
Once again !
Once again screw having any kind of fun in this town, just keep it the same old boring sh%#&@hole .
Alternative
Instead of everyone complaining about it maybe they could pass out sparklers to everyone. Fireworks don't bother me and I believe the majority of people enjoy them in town. I bet if we voted on it we would be able to set them off for New Years.
My 2 cents
I enjoy watching fireworks in a specific area - like the ones downtown for the 4th of July. I do not enjoy fireworks being set off in my neighborhood for 2 or 3 days straight at all hours of the day or night. Some type of "happy medium" would be appreciated.
Caryos - If "having fun" causes severe distress to both people and animals, perhaps you should rethink your priorities. Your statement was selfish and self-serving.
fireworks...
I'm all for personal freedom and personal responsibility. I'm also for common courtesy. I don't personally set off fireworks, and that is because I don't like to infringe on other's lives. It would be nice if others did the same strictly out of the kindness of their hearts without involving laws and cops. Take a moment and think of your neighbors before partaking in such activities.
@JNUKara
Is a NIMBY. Just because it's not your neighborhood or your "Chosen" holiday does not make it OK to bother the neighbors. I resided downtown for a number of years. I finally decided to move away because the drunken imbeciles celebrating something they do not understand on the fourth of July got to be tiresome.
When noisy people annoy me at
When noisy people annoy me at night I call JPD. They have always been pretty good about dealing with the problem.
Another Hellish Night
JE Fume, unfortunately, JPD can't be everywhere. They came out to our street tonight several times only to leave and have the fireworks start again. This year was by far the worst I have ever seen. People can be so inconsiderate. I am very supportive of fireworks on the Fourth and on New Year's in specific areas of town for a certain period of time but starting at 5pm and going until the wee hours of the morning for several days is intolerable.
Train your dogs not to get
Train your dogs not to get spooked. Buy a cap gun when your dog is a puppy and when it's busy eating fire it off a few times in the house. Bit too late for you, but maybe some others will learn. Fireworks are not going away, during the summer people should really use them out the road. But what do you do?
having fun
first I wanna say SORRY.. I was one of the tree hugging card carrying republicians who set off small bottle rockets last night with my family.. YES WE HAD FUN, yes our neighbors were out having fun too with pots and pans banging and their own fireworks.. its only twice a year for them, and the juneau prudes can handle that, and continue to [filtered word] and whine the other 363 days of the year about everything else in Juneau thats making noise, dogs crapping on your lawn, teenagers driving boomer cars down your road, someones dumb idea, jpd, politics and etc... etc.
there arent many family fun things to do in this town and its one reason there is such a high rate of vandalizing buildings, cars and public areas. Juneau is dead set against anything fun that makes a noise, God forbid we wake up a tree or a squirrel, or squish a wild strawberry walking on a trail making any kind of noise over a whisper. I for one, will be out there making noise and showing the world I am here.. I can be quiet when I am dead and 6ft under.. then bury me butt up so the juneau prudes know what to do.
Last night was just
Last night was just horrible
The loud Fireworks are "Pipe Bombs", people are using pipes to set off these things and they are against the law.
They are too loud and explosive to be setting off near our homes. They will cause ear damage, property damage and possibly brain damage to young children.
JPD needs to enforce our laws. People need to be fined for setting off these Fireworks.
@skyview
first of all the term "PIPE BOMB" refers to a bomb that is made useing a pipe as the housing to contain the explosives. and second how do you set off a bomb useing a pipe? You people need to get over yourselfs there are fireworks 2 thats 2 days out of the whole year. if someone is setting them of and throwing them in your yard or at your house or trying to cause your or someone else harm then call jpd otherwise just shut up and get over it.
Yes- people are using Steel Pipes to house&setoff Fireworks
I went out last night after my house shook a number of times and stood and watched my neighbors as they stuffed things into a steal pipe. When they set it off, the explosion shook the ground. They were also drinking and had little kids running around. I asked them to stop but they wouldn't.
Look, if people are sitting in their homes and having to resort to sedating their pets because the noise is too loud then YES it most certainly is time to put an end to the Fireworks. From what I see it is only getting worse.
re;Joanne
well you should have called JPD, and those pipes are the same ones used on the barge during 4th of July.. you stick firework mortors down inside and light and they shoot up in the air.. if they had small kids running around and drinking too boot, I would have called the police myself. I am sorry you have crappy drunken neighbors..
freedom doesnt mean squat in Juneau
"Look, if people are sitting in their homes and having to resort to sedating their pets because the noise is too loud then YES it most certainly is time to put an end to the Fireworks. From what I see it is only getting worse."
I guess the USA doesnt mean freedom anymore... maybe we should be named USSR.. fireworks were shot ALL over the world celebrating the new year and the 4th of july is for OUR FREEDOM and INDEPENDENCE... no one has the right to take it away from anyone.....
@alaskan teacher
I agree, drinking + explosives + little kids = a call to jpd. Unless of course it something like (Mom, Dad and the kids are sitting in the yard Dad is having a beer and watching uncle Bob at the end of the culdisac lighting off fireworks and everyone is enjoying the show) except for the bitchy neighbor that nobody on the street gets along with because every time you pass gas they call the cops because it smells so bad. ha ha
@Joanne
"watched my neighbors as they stuffed things into a steal pipe."
If you knew the pipe was stolen, why didn't you call JPD?
Constitution does not give you the right to break laws
Our Freedoms do not and our Constitution does not
give anyone the right to break the law.
Last I checked the law has not changed and "Personal Displays" of Fireworks at your home are against the law in Juneau. When I called JPD last 4th of July I was told by the dispatch girl that Fireworks were legal. Then I called CBJ and was told that Fireworks were "illegal". I think JPD has weak leadership because who ever you talk to there can make up their own laws. Sad state of affairs if you ask me
Stupid law though
Other than whiners, there is no good reason for fireworks to be illegal in Juneau. We aren't going to have a forest fire over it. Perhaps there should be rules about when and where, but it's a law that should be taken off the books. JPD has real criminals to worry about.
If Only
This article and the comments make me laugh. If only our forefathers and past generations could read it, they would turn over in their graves! People are complaining about other people celebrating? People are actually asking others to live a certain way in order to satisfy their pets' desires? Really? I'd rather hear the fireworks and deal with a shaking dog than live in a country where celebrating our freedom and showing our patriotism is banned or criminalized. Alaska is suppose to be the last frontier and it has a reputation as a wild place with rugged people. I hope no one down south hears about how the people in Juneau cry about fireworks and their dogs shaking. How embarrassing. When I hear a firework go off, I smile with a feeling of patriotism and freedom and I am proud to be an American. When I read this artcle, I am sad at what has become a town full of sissies and crybabies. God Bless America! Ka-Boom!
@CommonCents: I want to show
@CommonCents: I want to show my patriotism by getting drunk on your lawn, screaming lines from "A Streetcar Named Desire" (actually, just "STELLA!" over and over again), and urinating on your rhododendrons.
If you disagree with this, then you are a hypocrite and a terrorist and not a true American. How dare you try to suppress my display of patriotism.
Also, if you really do smile, filled with patriotism, when you hear fireworks go off, maybe you should remind yourself that fireworks are Chinese in origin and that when people light off fireworks, they generally aren't doing it out of some sort of strange patriotic duty. They're doing it because they're simple-minded dolts who think loud noises and bright lights are fun. They're people who think Michael Bay is a talented director.
let's party
PP have you ever heard of a song called the Star Spangled Banner? I suggest you listen to it sometime. Kudos to the Chinese for gun powder and fireworks (and Kung Pao Chicken).
Sorry you had to endure people having a good time in your neighborhood. Bastards! I'll plant some Rhododendrons for you for next year. Don't forget the fireworks and polish up on your "Stella" I am looking forward to it. I coulda been a contenda, I coulda been somebody! Sounds like fun.
PP
Isn't buying a bunch of cheap crap made in China patriotic?
Yeah, CommonCents, it's not
Yeah, CommonCents, it's not about people having a good time, no matter how you try to reframe it. It's about noise pollution. If you want to set off fireworks, go somewhere where you aren't bothering anyone else. Some people have to go to sleep, others are seriously upset by loud, repetitive noises. Think of other people besides yourself.
I see no reason to accommodate a behavior that is completely unnecessary and very disruptive.
