A correction

I would like to thank the Juneau Empire for all the coverage given the Juneau League of Women Voters during the past year. However, I would like to make one correction in the article on the city budget survey (Dec. 20, 2011, “City to go with telephone survey on budget issues.)”

The League quoted a price based on the return of 510 mail-out surveys (not the 351 mentioned in the article), a number exceeding the amount needed for statistical significance. The League actually expected 1,700 returned surveys or more, based on the historical rate of return for mail surveys of 10-15 percent. At any rate, we respect the Assembly’s decision, and applaud the McDowell group for offering to complete the phone survey at cost.

The League has always supported participatory democracy, and we continue to encourage citizen involvement and communication with elected officials. The League encourages all those receiving calls on the budget survey to take the time to respond thoughtfully. Thanks again to the Juneau Empire staff and their dedication to local news.
