Just stop taking public cash

Bishop (Edward J.) Burns’ latest plea for religious freedom (Sunday, June 10) as guaranteed by our Constitution overlooks a very simple solution. If the Catholic Church is so concerned that their war on women is outlawed by our government, all they have to do is have their institutions treat only their own religious affiliates and believers. They need not accept any funds from the U.S. government, and the problem is solved. Of course, they then face the old belief that it is up to men to keep women “barefoot and pregnant” as they say in the South, but that’s another solution.

They don’t believe in abortion or contraception, which is fine for those who believe as they do. However, this does bring up an interesting facet. France is currently facing a problem with their Muslim fundamentalist believers for their law outlawing the burqa and full- face coverings. How does his church feel about that? According to his letter, that should be totally allowed.

I will not bring up the sidebar that ranting about religious freedom is one way to divert attention from the world-wide anger at the past behavior of some priests’ and children.
