Medieval times?

During the Middle Ages, feudalism was the law of the land. It was the basis by which upper nobility class maintained control over the lower classes. Other crucial contributors to this structure were the leaders of the church and other kings (In America’s case, these would be the billionaires, Catholic and Mormon Churches and every other extreme Evangelical movement).

I’ve been in constant shock mode this election year. Have I fallen down the rabbit hole? Corporations are citizens? With rights? Yet, in America today, 21 states have new voter suppression laws, the abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America is tracking 235 bills in legislatures that it says would restrict abortion and there are dozens of anti-gay marriage laws.

Arizona House Bill 2625 “Employers with religious objections may discriminate against women who use contraceptives Signed into law May 11, 2012

Many politicians believe they have the right to pass judgment, through laws based upon their religious preferences, to assert that the divine creator of the universe (God) somehow made a mistake in making some people with different sexual preferences. Really? God’s not divine? Perfect? He made mistakes?

Is it not bad to take away people’s right to vote? Right to choose? Right to love or marry who they want? Why is it Elizabeth Taylor can get married eight times, Mitt Romney twice and the media and politicians say she is an icon and he may be worthy of serving as the President of the United States. Yet a great gay couple I know in Anchorage, who love each other and show devotion every day, cannot?

Have we gone back in time so far that the strong (financially) do what they will and the weak suffer what they must?

In just days we will be asked to vote for our next leader of the free world. Ironic isn’t it that we call ourselves the land of the free, unless you are gay, a woman or someone they don’t really want to vote.
