We truly need "a Congressman for all Alaskans"

I would like to offer congratulations to Congressman Don Young for his election to a twenty-first term in Congress. I sincerely wish him well in representing the people of Alaska.

I am concerned, however, by comments attributed to Congressman Young, in an article published by the Ketchikan Daily News, dated Wednesday, November 7, 2012. In that article, Congressman Young is quoted as saying that President Obama “has to make the first step forward” or the House will act as a “check mate” for the duration. That suggests an unwillingness to reach at least halfway across the aisle. The Congressman’s words sound like those of a petulant child demanding that someone else act first or he won’t cooperate.

I believe that Congressman Young is better than that. His twenty-one terms in office have provided him with both the wisdom and experience to be a powerful voice of reason during this next Congress.

He further stated his belief that Alaska may need him now, more than ever. That may be so, but maybe not for the reasons he stated. He is needed to act for all the citizens of Alaska, not just for the Republicans who voted for him.

It’s time for Congressman Young to live up to his own slogan, “The Congressman for all Alaskans” and reach across the aisle in the spirit of cooperation.
