Concerned about new gun range proposal

On Sept. 26 the Empire ran an article: “Permit delayed for mall and indoor gun range.” It surprised me there seemed to be no reaction from the general public regarding this news. I am extremely anxious about such a mall and range. I quote from the Sept. 26 article: “We are all into guns” (those seeking the permit); “there will be possible weekend firearms “giveaways;” the place will be “a nice place to get families shooting;” there will be “a full service gun store” and there might be “the rental of onsite use of fully automatic firearms.” One of the owners is quoted as saying: “We are just trying to have a nice place to do gun sports... a place to get families shooting;” “everybody needs to shoot an AK47 and a Tommy Gun.” If you believe this, sit back and do nothing. It this upsets you as it does me, speak up! Is this mall and gun range what Juneau needs and wants? The Planning Commission now has issued a permit, but does it have the final say? Why have there been no public hearings on the matter? Who is backing such a huge investment?

To set the matter straight, I am not a person trying to do away with all guns. Recreational hunters, subsistance hunters and police need to carry, and I am in favor of gun safety and markmanship instruction, which we already have in Juneau.
