It's not the last 10 acres

On Dec. 17., Juneau Empire Reporter Russell Stigall reported that the Juneau city staff recommended to the Planning Commission to deny Becknell Inc.’s application for a rezone of Hosinger Pond (Gravel Pit) to a combination of industrial and light commercial uses. It’s a gravel pit near wetlands. The Planning Commission has postponed the hearing. The rezone development would create jobs. I’m sorry to disagree. Juneau needs this approved.

The Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the United States at 17 million acres. The gravel pit is approximately 82.66-acre. Not even a Sitka spruce needle of the whole forest. We need to stop thinking like we are developing the last 10 acres of Alaska. The State of Alaska includes approximately 63 percent of the United States wetland ecosystems (Hall et al. 1994). Estimates place the total acreage at approximately 130 million acres, or about one-third of the State.

We must not be afraid of building, growing, developing. A strong economy stems from continued growth. I say rezone. Let’s employ some Alaskans already  Please email the CBJ Planning Commission and tell them you support the rezoning and jobs for Juneau: PC_Comments@ci.juneau.ak.us
