What are we thinking?

After the horrific event in Connecticut this past Friday I can imagine that the people proposing the new gun range and mall here in Juneau are collectively holding their breath, waiting for any fallout of opposition. But we must ask the question, “What are we thinking here?” Are we providing a training ground for some future assault with automatic weapons here in Juneau? Let’s be honest. These are not hunting weapons. They are designed to kill people, not deer. Do we as a community want to take the next step from video games to actually providing a place where disgruntled and unhappy people can legitimately practice using assault weapons and machine guns?

Doesn’t the murder of these little children demonstrate the madness this action would represent? I suppose the people proposing this gun range and mall are hoping this will all blow over, but as history demonstrates, mass murders in this country are increasing, not blowing over. Its time to come to our senses and put a permanent stop to this.

We don’t need some copy-cat walking into Auke Bay school, or Gastineau Elementary, or any of our other schools or anywhere in town intent on mass murder.
