Food storage is a vital issue

Food security, like energy security, is a very serious issue for all Alaskans, especially for people who live in the villages. Stores in Rural and Remote Alaska have their food flown in and have enough food for a week+ on the store shelves if the planes can’t come in.

Most of our 200+ Tribal villages are not connected to the road or railroad system. The only transportation in and out of most villages is by air year-round, weather permitting, and by marine transportation in the ice free months of the year.

I shudder to think of what would happen if there was a 3 to 4 week disruption of food deliveries to Anchorage and Fairbanks. A catastrophic earthquake could put the airport, railroad, and harbors out of commission and that would leave urban Alaska stranded and the Tribal Villages of Alaska without a steady supply of food.

There is nothing funny about being prepared for disasters in Alaska. Getting ahead of the disaster curve makes a lot of sense and should be encouraged.

I urge the governor to take as seriously energy security for our over 200+ villages as well as urban Alaska’s energy needs into the future.

I wish the governor well on his mission to plan for any contingency that would ensure that all Alaskans will have food stored to carry us through any disaster.
