Good subs need a better system for choosing sub jobs

I have been subbing in the Juneau School District since the fall of 2007 and have developed a good relationship with the Valley Elementary schools. I feel that the reason there may not be enough subs this school year is because of the new automated sub system that was introduced this past fall. One of the problems with this system is that if you accept an assignment in a para-educator position you cannot reject it to sub for a teacher because the system will not let you reject and accept another assignment. I have been asked by teachers, twice last week if I could sub for them. I told them I was already in a para position. In the past they had two sub coordinators who knew the subs and the schools so they could pull you from one position to have you sub in another. This occurred more often in the last few years when teachers became ill and the sub coordinator would call and ask if I would sub for a teacher. This system may be proven in larger school districts, but until they include options to reject an assignment to fill in for a teacher who has requested you then there will still be problems in getting good subs for your children.
