Something rotten

Something coming out of Juneau stinks and it’s not just cruise ship effluent. In the past year the Alaska Legislature and Governor Sean Parnell have thrown the democratic process and ethics into the bilge by rejecting public input on legislation and justifying flawed policy with outright lies. For the In-Stream Water Reservations Bill, a bill that would greatly infringe on Alaskan water rights, the Legislature scheduled public testimony for 5:15 p.m. The Capitol doors are locked at 5. During senate committee hearings on the Cruise Ship Wastewater Discharge Bill, 21 people testified against it (citing recorded examples of DEC lies) and four testified in support. The bill is plowing ahead, leaving a 2006 citizens’ initiative and 800,000,000,000 gallons of partially treated human waste in its wake.

Senators, representatives and Governor Parnell: we are paying attention. Even if we can’t see Juneau from here, we can certainly smell the manure wafting this way.
