In the debate over the functionality of the new Day Boat Alaska Class Ferry design, one fact should not get lost. The governor announced it at a Chamber of Commerce meeting in Ketchikan, with the objective to build whatever size ferry could be built there, in their shipyard-to-nowhere that hasn’t built a functional piece of public equipment, ever.
It seems more apparent that the governor’s intent is to is to put Ketchikan’s vote in his pocket at the expense of the needs of SE and the state as a whole, and in the process throwing our good money after bad. When this was first shown to the legislative committee, Commissioner of Transportation Kemp made the astounding statement that they had a 40 percent design cost for the Alaska Class Ferry, which is an easy crude round-up to half. Since we own the plans already, for the production cost it seems like we should be able to build two more new Takus, and have far more value!
