SB 27 is not the will of Alaska's people

In reading the Tuesday, March 12, Juneau Empire it looked to me like the Grand Old Party of Senate Alaska State legislators are showing more hell-bent support for out-of-state multinational corporations — I sound alarmed — since our Governor plus 15 Senators including Anchorage’s, Ms Giessel, have seemingly organized a sweeping effort to place a huge ore-mine in the Bristol Bay area just above our magnificent and primordial red-spawning-sockeye-salmon headwaters.

Can anyone honestly believe that an Alaskan governor would draft something like Senate Bill 27? A bill that would allow his state departments of Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources to trump the federal government’s proven process by trying to end-run the federal governments permitting process? So that eager developers can drain, then fill state owned lands disregarding the obvious and irreversible consequences to both land and the creatures that live there? Unbelievable? Yes! But that is just what this totally thoughtless Senate Bill 27 is attempting to do!

However — the one bright spot in this administrative nonsense is wisely noted by Sen. Wielechowski’s keenly working mind — because he knows as others know that such blatant action would likely never pass muster under Obama’s new Secretary of the Interior — Ms. Sally Jewell. She has indicated — by personal example — that she truly loves all the outdoors which obviously includes our cherished and priceless wild-lands of Alaska.

Governor — please come join in with your people, where the action is!
