Misdirected efforts

The Juneau School District’s resolution to support high –speed Internet service on the State ferries is misdirected. The Alaska State House is cutting the Governor’s proposed funding for two important education programs. The House is cutting all $138,000 from the Live Homework Help program and $150,000 proposed for the Online With Libraries (OWL) program. Both programs provide effective distance delivery of education for students in the most rural and remote areas. These cuts will put these programs at risk if these programs are not fully funded.

The Juneau School District needs to put their full support into these programs if they are to be successful. Those who are now students in Alaska’s rural and remote area could be future students in Juneau’s schools. With these better learning tools they will not be a burden to the Juneau School district if they should happen to move to Juneau or any other urban school district in Alaska.

The Serenity Prayer says: “God grant me the serenity, To accept the things I cannot change;

Courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference.” The Juneau School Board needs the courage to make a difference by putting their complete support into the full funding for the Live Homework Help and OWL projects.
