Disrespect

First off, thank you to the Juneau Jazz & Classics for bringing the tremendous talent Booker T. Jones to Juneau. What a rare treat it was to experience such a blues legend in person. I have to say however, that I was deeply disappointed by the blatant disrespect the man was shown by the Juneau crowd this evening. Throughout the entirety of the show, people all around me talked loudly, essentially ignoring the incredible performance before us. I understand that occasionally something must be shared, but leaning in close and speaking quietly will do the trick. Instead, people talked with alarming volume to be heard above the music. Full conversations were occurring at a disheartening rate, by young and old alike. I am proud of the strong and numerous arts opportunities that Juneau offers, but was shocked by the utter lack of decorum I witnessed. I understand it was a high-energy performance, and yes, there was alcohol served, but Centennial Hall is not a bar and our behavior as a crowd should reflect that. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated event; I experienced something similar at a recent Juneau Symphony concert. Maybe I’m just being old-fashioned, but I was embarrassed by the rude response Mr. Jones and his band were met with. I can only hope Juneau crowds remember that a little respect and reverence go a long way.

Thank you to those who showed consideration to both your fellow concert-goers, and the profoundly talented musician we were all there to see.
