Be careful with fire

Capital City Fire Rescue reminds everyone to use extreme caution with any and all open burning. With the sustained higher than normal temperatures, the backyards and wild lands in Juneau have become very dry and there is an increased potential for wild land fire danger. At this time there is not a ban on open burning. A permit is still required for any open burning, including burn barrels. Some helpful suggestions:

• If the wind is more than 10 mph, do not burn or, if you are, extinguish your fires.

• Have a charged hose near the fire to extinguish any spot fires.

• Keep all fires small and manageable.

• ALL fires MUST BE ATTENDED at ALL times.

• Make sure the fire is completely out before leaving it.

• Wait to burn when there has been some rain.

If anyone has questions about open burning or would like to have a site inspection before burning, contact the fire department at 586-5322. Remember, open burning is a privilege, not a right. Careless acts or inappropriate use of fire will result in citations and criminal charges can be pursued. If you do not need to have an open burn, then don’t burn. Taking an unnecessary chance of destroying your home or property, or the property of your neighbors is not worth it.
