Change needed within Sealaska board

Sealaska Shareholders: Do you hear the distant laugh? We are being laughed at, because another year has gone by, and again we have seen very qualified independent candidates who were subjected to the category of “also ran,” because we failed them. Until we as Sealaska shareholder owners put forth a united front, we will continue to see our directed votes diluted by too many people trying to make a difference.

We as Sealaska shareholder owners can start a grass roots campaign to unite, but we need to do it together. One, and at the most, two candidates should be the only independent people placed on the ballot each year, and they should be vetted and be made to understand that they are supposed to represent the people, not themselves. Slow change is better than no change, and getting one person per year elected as a new Director, will clean out the firewood pile over time.

As for the Directors of Sealaska, whether you were voted in by the discretionary ballot or you were sent there to make a change, you have no doubt heard the concern of shareholder owners who have not seen progress. Quite frankly, it would be nice to see those who were voted in as Independents, stand up and demand that the discretionary process be eliminated, instead of collecting those same discretionary votes to keep their positions.

Every Director should stand on their own merit each year and be voted up or down by the will of the people they represent, not by dividing discretionary votes to keep their jobs.

We need to get this message spread to wherever we have our Sealaska family. We sink together or we swim together, make your choice!
