Six unexplained "no" votes need to be explained

It is mystifying why the Assembly (other than Mr. Jesse Kiehl, Ms. Karen Crane and Mr. Loren Jones) voted against a motion to reconsider earlier Assembly action (taken without a chance for pubic comment or full Assembly discussion) furthering the possibility of reopening the downtown AJ Mine. As Mr. Kiehl pointed out, no one from the public had opposed the Assembly taking a bit more time on the issue; instead, there had been a flood of comment — apparently from all perspectives on the mine — suggesting that it would serve Juneau best to have this openly discussed.

Remember, the issue at hand was only whether to look at the mine-related action again, in a public meeting, not what the final outcome would be.

Common courtesy, as well as common sense, would suggest that the Assembly at least explain its inaction.

Yet not one of the Assembly members voting against slowing the process down a bit addressed the motion at all during the meeting. Not one of them spoke even one word, other than voting “no.”

And so we, Juneau’s citizens, are left to wonder why.
