Vista Drive plan a bad idea

I see a bad idea is moving forward. Volunteers of America provides much admired services for poor and disenfranchised people throughout America. They want to do the same for Juneau and they should be commended for that desire. But even the best and brightest make Miss Steaks.

Juneau needs more affordable housing. That is a fact, Jack. However, putting a 75-unit apartment low-income housing project on Vista Drive is an avoidable blunder.

There are already over 200 low-income units in the immediate area. This project will result in an unbalanced allocation of income-based housing in West Juneau and Douglas.

There are better locations for this project. Sites that are closer to schools, shopping and other essential services. There are locations that would be safer and more accessible for all potential residents but especially a great deal safer for children and the handicapped. Locations that would have minimal impact on established neighborhoods instead of the major impact the proposed project would have on West Juneau and Douglas.

Juneau needs and wants another library. Juneau needs and wants more affordable housing. Moving forward with this project at the proposed location would be like building the new library downtown next to the Red Dog Saloon. It would be an avoidable mistake.
