Letter: Europe's anger of U.S. spying justified

The recent news that the National Security Agency has been spying on 35 world leaders has drawn outrage and anger from the citizens of Europe, which I believe to be entirely appropriate. Personally, I would like to see more outrage and anger from us, the citizens of the United States, about our own government using instruments of surveillance to collect data through our phones, email, and Internet searches. Not only is such surveillance an invasion of privacy and unconstitutional, but the actions themselves shatter trust between American citizens and their government. Arguments that “this has always gone on,” and “I have nothing to hide” miss the point. The point is that the NSA is operating illegally. In the United States, we believe in the rule of law. As citizens, we must demand that the National Security Agency adhere to the law.
