Letter: How much is the 'Field of Fireweed' worth?

Thank you for the editorial that made the case both for and against rezoning the “Field of Fireweed.” As I understand it, Bicknell, Inc. owns the land and purchased it with its current zoning of “rural reserve.”

In the case for rezoning, you ask the question, “How much is this field of fireweed worth?” We can presume that when Bicknell bought it, they paid what they thought it was worth at its current zoning. In asking the CBJ to rezone it for industrial use, they are asking the citizens of Juneau for a gift of whatever increased value that would give them.

Now that we know we are being asked to pay the price of foregoing not only the beauty of the field of fireweed but also a valuable resource for our marine ecosystem, what is Bicknell being asked for in return?
